Ss. Peter and Paul
... Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkest whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake Jesus, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto Peter, Follow me. ... (John 21 18-19)
According to tradition, St. Peter (shown above with the keys of heaven [see Matt. 16 18]) was crucified in Rome during the reign of the emperor Nero (AD 54-68) and was buried on the Vatican Hill where the great basilica of St. Peter now stands.
... the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him ... (Acts 28 16)
According to tradition, St. Paul (shown above with the sword with which he was martyred) was beheaded in AD 67 on the left bank of the Tiber, at the spot later called Tre Fontane, and is buried below the basilica of S. Paulo fuori le Mura.
